It multiplies your monthly visitors by the pages each visitor views, by the average weight of a page, and then by an overhead factor. The overhead factor accounts for things the raw page weight misses: repeat asset downloads, retries, API calls, bots and crawlers, and a safety margin. A factor of 1.5 is a reasonable starting point; bump it up for media-heavy sites or aggressive bot traffic.

Across the web a typical page is roughly 2 MB once images, fonts, scripts and stylesheets are counted, but it varies enormously: a lean text page can be under 500 KB, while an image- or video-rich page can exceed 5 MB. Your browser's developer tools show the transferred size on the Network tab — use your own measured figure for the most accurate result.

The monthly figure tells you whether you'll hit a transfer cap; the sustained bandwidth is the average throughput that traffic represents. Real traffic isn't flat, though — it spikes during campaigns, launches and peak hours, often many times the average.
