Two things. First, the syntax: that the address is well-formed, with a valid local part and a real domain name. Second, deliverability at the domain level: it resolves the domain's MX records to confirm there are mail servers ready to accept mail, falling back to an A record where a domain has no MX (which RFC 5321 still allows for delivery). It also flags role-based and disposable addresses.

No, and that's deliberate. Verifying a single mailbox means opening an SMTP conversation with the mail server, which is intrusive, frequently blocked, and often gives unreliable answers because servers deliberately accept-then-bounce. This tool checks everything that can be confirmed cleanly and without contacting the mail server: valid syntax and a domain that is set up to receive mail. That catches the large majority of bad addresses — typos and dead domains.

A role-based address points to a function rather than a person — think support, info or billing inboxes. They're valid but often shared or automated, so many senders avoid adding them to marketing lists. A disposable address uses a throwaway-mail provider that deletes messages after a short time; it's a strong signal someone doesn't want to be contacted again. Both are flagged here so you can decide how to treat them.
